Words on Wednesday

I’ve read a bit lately, and I’ve come across some rather strange (to me anyway) words. Among them are the following:

tatterdemalion
adj.:
tattered or dilapidated.
n.:
a person in tattered clothing.

~ Longbourne by Jo Baker

lumme, exclam.: an expression of surprise or interest.

~ Birds of a Feather (Maisie Dobbs Mysteries) by Jacqueline Winspear

fungo, n. (also fungo fly): a flyball hit for practice. (also fungo bat or stick) a long lightweight bat for hitting practice balls to fielders.

~ Saving Babe Ruth by Tom Swyers

schadenfreude, n.: pleasure derived by someone from another person’s misfortune.

~ The Lake House by Kate Morton

What new words or phrases have you read this past week? It always amazes me how many new words there still are to learn. Share with us, won’t you?
